Charlie James Gallery, founded in 2008 in Los Angeles' Chinatown, has built a reputation for presenting a dynamic blend of emerging and established artists with distinct voices. The gallery’s ethos asserts that art should engage with the time of its making, and it is known for platforming work of significant political and cultural engagement. Known for its interdisciplinary approach, the gallery showcases work across a wide array of mediums, including painting, sculpture, textile, installation, and New Media.
A key focus of Charlie James Gallery is the representation of marginalized voices and the exploration of underrepresented narratives. The gallery frequently collaborates with artists whose work addresses issues of identity, race, gender, and socio-political concerns, providing a platform for meaningful dialogue and challenging conventional perspectives.
Under the direction of Gallery Director Ever Velasquez, the gallery has gained further acclaim for its thoughtful and provocative curatorial practices, particularly through its annual group exhibitions. This approach has earned the gallery recognition not only within Los Angeles but across the broader art world. Charlie James Gallery places great importance on the canonical integration of its artists, collaborating closely with museums and academics to ensure the critical placement and discussion of their work.
The gallery operates from two spaces on historic Chung King Road in Chinatown, Los Angeles.
