Charlie James Gallery is pleased to present Cut from the Same Cloth, a group exhibition curated by Los Angeles-based artist John Weston. The show gathers artists whose work exudes a deep interest in pattern and decoration, with a specific relation to textiles and fabric as well as psychedelic imagery. The artists included in this exhibit are Charley Alexander, Michelle Andrade, Linda Besemer, Carole Caroompas, Matt Carter, Linda Hudson, Lorenzo Hurtado Segovia, Jim Isermann, Ana Rodriguez, John Schlue, and Geoffrey Todd Smith.
While the works in the show offer a variety of conceptual concerns and stylistic approaches, they are united by a few common threads. The primary connection for the artists is an interest in patterns. Along with the incorporation of pattern the works have a strong tie to textiles. This tie is often explicit, as in Hudson and Hurtado Segovia’s weavings and in Caroompas, Carter, and Schlue’s paintings which incorporate embroidery or fabrics. Other works in the exhibit imply a reference to textiles via their patterns which are often derived directly from textiles. A third thread connecting these works is an element of psychedelia. This psychedelic element is evident in the optical and perceptual effects of the hard-edged, geometric abstractions of Besemer, Isermann, Schlue and Smith. While in the works of Alexander, Andrade, Rodriguez and others the psychedelic element is conveyed in a fractured patchwork of images, colors and shapes. All of the works utilize intense colors, repetition, and dense compositions to create works that puzzle the mind and delight the eye.
