Newly emancipated from a decade-long committed monogamous relationship, Margie Schnibbe goes on the rebound and explores the world of hooking-up via online dating sites, mobile phone apps and sexting. Using her body as a vehicle and her iPhone as a witness, Ms. Schnibbe delivers a candid and quick-witted glimpse into a private world of sexual desire, pleasure and perversion.
The exhibition title is a mashup of Richard von Krafft-Ebing’s groundbreaking Victorian Era medical text on human sexual behavior and the common internet shorthand/slang that is used to flag explicit images and texts “not suitable/safe to be viewed in the workplace”.
First published in 1886 Psychopathia Sexualis: eine Klinisch-Forensische Studie (Sexual Psychopathy: A Clinical-Forensic Study) is composed of case histories of sexual ‘deviants’ carefully organized into categories and classifications. The book is known for popularizing the terms sadism, masochism, exhibitionism and fetish. Psychopathia Sexualis was extremely successful as a reference volume for psychiatrists. It was also a new and popular form of pornographic literature for the sexually transgressive- anyone whose sexuality was characterized as operating outside the constraints of a normative pro-creative Victorian economy.
Schnibbe’s NSFW fragments of dialogue and images function as mini scripts and micro narratives. Each work represents a specific performative moment in time as well as a contemporary and concise case study of co-author and artist.
Bio:
Margie Schnibbe is an artist and filmmaker who is known for creating works that blur the boundaries between pornography and art. Her work is informed by first-person experience, popular culture and classic psychological/philosophical texts.
Ms. Schnibbe’s work has recently been exhibited and screened at Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art (Rotterdam), Arsenal Institute for Film and Video Art (Berlin), Kunsthalle Wien (Vienna), Arte TV (Germany/France), Center for Book Arts (New York), Anthology Film Archives (New York), Yerba Buena Center for the Arts (San Francisco), and in Los Angeles at LACE, Film Forum, Human Resources, MOCA, Francois Ghebaly Gallery, The Box, and David Kordansky Gallery. She has been reviewed/featured in numerous publications including Artforum, Frieze, Modern Painters and Artillery.
Margie Schnibbe (b. 1963, Yonkers, NY) lives and works in Los Angeles. Ms. Schnibbe received an MFA from California Institute of the Arts in Film/Video in 1998 and a BFA in Sculpture from Kansas City Art Institute in 1991.
