Charlie James Gallery is delighted to present New York-based artist Glenn Goldberg in his first solo show with the gallery. In Somewhere, Goldberg continues to paint with an intimate, subtle touch and an ongoing involvement in color, structure, pattern and iconography related to living things (dogs, birds, man and assorted natural forms.)

The current group of paintings adds the rainbow as an energized icon to the pre-existing family in new works that are simultaneously emblematic, mysterious and gentle. They are influenced by Chinese ceramics, Shaker furniture, Coptic textiles, Japanese kimono fabric, American folk art, Native American totem poles, African rugs, and Italian mosaics. Artists of influence have been Walter Gropius and the Bauhaus, Henry Darger, Georgia O’Keefe, Bill Traylor, Paula Modersohn Becker, James Castle, Anni Albers, Forrest Bess, Paula Rego, Alan Shields, Sienese painting and Giorgio Morandi.

Glenn Goldberg’s work was first introduced at the Willard Gallery in New York in the 1980s and subsequently exhibited at Knoedler Gallery, Barbara Krakow Gallery, Greenberg Gallery, Hill Gallery, Jason McCoy Gallery, Betty Cuningham Gallery, and Pace Prints. His work is in the collections of MOCA in LA, National Gallery in DC, Brooklyn Museum, Metropolitan Museum in NY, Nelson Atkins Museum in Kansas City, High Museum in Atlanta, JP Morgan Chase, and the Bronx Museum. He is a Guggenheim Fellow and the recipient of numerous grants and awards, most recently as artist in residence at Urban Glass in Brooklyn. Goldberg lives in New York and works in East Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
