Ala Ebtekar
VOLTA NY

March 6 - 9 , 2014

The gallery is delighted to present a solo presentation of Bay Area artist Ala Ebtekar.

Ala Ebtekar (b.1978, Berkeley, CA) describes his work as “a visual glimpse of a crossroad where present day events meet history and mythology”. As a young teenager he joined the seminal group K.O.S. (Kids of Survival), working with artist Tim Rollins on collaborative artworks involving groups of urban youth. This new body of work for VOLTA NY 2014 brings together divergent places and times, creating a confluence of ancient traditions and an imagined future. Inspired by the delicacy and intricacy found in Persian manuscript illuminations and Islamic architecture, the work employs the image and metaphor of the the portal, the gateway into the next, or the future. Ebtekar received his BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute in 2002 and his MFA degree from Stanford University in 2006. His work has been exhibited internationally and throughout the United States in such shows as Frieze NY (2012/13), “cylindr.us” at the Asian Art Museum, “Migrating Identities” at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, “The Generational: Younger than Jesus” at the New Museum in New York City, “One Way or Another: Asian American Art Now”, a touring exhibition originating at the Asia Society, NYC, the 2006 California Biennial at the Orange County Museum of Art, “The Global Contemporary: Art Worlds After 1989” at the ZKM – Museum for Contemporary Art in Germany, as well as in “The Beginning of Thinking is Geometric” at the Maraya Art Centre in Sharjah, UAE. He is currently a visiting lecturer at Stanford University, and lives and works in the San Francisco Bay Area.
