Charlie James Gallery is delighted to present Los Angeles-based media artist Casey Reas in his first solo gallery exhibition in Los Angeles. Linear Perspective presents three new series of work, each extending Reas’s engagement with mass media.

Gathering source material from newspapers, social media profiles, broadcast television and YouTube searches, Reas has created eight new real-time video works that manifest his personal confrontations with media. Projected on the main gallery wall, Linear Perspective (2015) is a work-in-progress that sources the primary front-page photographs from the New York Times for the entire year. The work will be complete on December 31st. The All Your Face Are Belong To Us series are hybrid portraits that compress the profiles pictures of five thousand of Reas’s Twitter followers. Fragments of each portrait are continuously added to construct a shifting group identity. KTTV (August 2015) and https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=adventuretime (30 July 2015) are audio and visual distortions of broadcast television. The source media is amplified and fragmented.

Casey Reas’s software, prints, and installations have been featured in over one hundred solo and group exhibitions at museums and galleries in the United States, Europe, and Asia. Recent venues include the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Art Institute of Chicago. Recent commissions have been awarded by the The University of Texas at Austin, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the New World Symphony in Miami. Reas’s work is in a range of private and public collections, including the Centre Georges Pompidou and the Victoria and Albert Museum.

Reas (b. 1972, Ohio) is a professor at the University of California, Los Angeles. He holds a masters degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology as well as a bachelors degree from the School of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning at the University of Cincinnati. Casey Reas is represented by bitforms gallery in New York City.
