Charlie James Gallery is delighted to present Record.Collect.Compose. – a group show organized by LA-based artist Masood Kamandy. The show features work by Veronique d’Entremont, Marten Elder, Aaron Giesel, Aspen Mays, Paul Mpagi Sepuya, Rimas Simaitis and Emily Sudd.
Using photo and non-photo-based work, Kamandy seeks to investigate photography in the most human of terms, examining specifically the impulses to “Record,” to “Collect” and to “Compose.” “Record” speaks to memory, and the human need to keep track of time’s passage and our experience within that passage. “Collect” suggests the human tendency to gather, organize and study elements of the world, in search of patterns, systems, knowledge, and meaning. Finally, “Compose” speaks to the impulse to add to the world, to produce, consider, edit and release. These actions unite a diverse group of artists working in different media, whose pieces reveal a desire to create transformed representations of real world places and things.
About the show’s Organizer:
Masood Kamandy (b. 1981 in Colorado) is a Los Angeles based artist working in lens-based media. Masood received his MFA from the University of California Los Angeles (2012) and his BFA from the School of Visual Arts (2004). He was invited to participate in dOCUMENTA(13) in both Kassel, Germany and Kabul, Afghanistan (Summer 2012). Kamandy helped found the first photography department at Kabul University (2002–05). He has had solo exhibitions in Los Angeles and The Netherlands and shown in group exhibitions at the UCLA New Wight Gallery (Los Angeles, 2012), The Torrance Art Museum (2012) and Control Room (Los Angeles, 2011). His works have appeared in museum exhibitions at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Contemporary Jewish Museum in San Francisco. Kamandy was included in the American Photography Annual (2010, 2008), is an Art Director’s Club “Young Gun” (2006) and has received commissions from The New York Times Magazine. Kamandy is also an arts educator in Los Angeles.
